CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- A section of a Chapel Hill road will be closed to all traffic for about three months as a major phase of a water main replacement project begins.

Starting Monday, the closure will affect W. Rosemary Street between North Merritt Mill Road and North Roberson Street as part of the Orange Water and Sewer Authority's (OWASA) first in a series of rolling closures to replace an over-80-year-old water main.

OWASA Project Manager Darren Berger noted the project is on schedule but acknowledged the disruption this phase will cause.

"We know this next phase is a bigger disruption, and we're grateful for the community's patience," Berger said. "These closures are a critical step toward building the most reliable water infrastructure that serves everyone who enjoys downtown."

Drivers and cyclists are encouraged to use West Franklin Street as the primary detour. Sidewalks are expected to remain open, though temporary closures may occur, with posted detours for pedestrians and those using mobility devices.

Town officials confirmed that businesses and community spaces along W. Rosemary Street will stay open during construction.

"You'll still be able to reach them from W. Franklin Street, and we know they'll appreciate your support," said Sarah Potter, Chapel Hill's business vitality manager.

Chapel Hill Transit's A route will continue serving the Northside neighborhood, with temporary stops on Lindsay and Church streets.

OWASA has installed a temporary water line to maintain service during construction and does not expect significant disruptions. If service impacts occur, customers will be notified directly.

What is the water main replacement project?

According to OWASA, along W. Rosemary Street, the project will replace 3,540 linear feet of existing water main with ductile iron pipe, and 440 linear feet will be replaced with PVC pipe.

Here are the next phases:
  • Phase 2: N. Roberson St. to Mitchell Ln.
  • Phase 3: Mitchell Ln. to Andrews Ln.
  • Phase 4: Andrews Ln. to Church St.
  • Phase 5: Church St. to Pritchard Ave.
  • Phase 6: Pritchard Ave. to N. Columbia St.
  • Phase 7/8: N. Columbia St. Intersection
