RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Raleigh Fire Department is starting to prepare fire trucks for the expected ice storm and ABC11 was there as a new tool was pulled out for the first time.

Special snow chains are placed on tires. There are spikes and we're being told that they'll help with traction when firefighters are called for an emergency during the storm.

The department also has other equipment on hand to help residents through the expected ice storm.

"Mobile rehab truck as well, that will be staffed, and a military-grade truck for rescue that can go out and assist the community as well," said Raleigh Fire Chief Herbert Griffin. "The thing is, we don't know what to expect, so we prepare for the unexpected things. We're prepared to respond and help our community in times of need."

Police say there are preparations made at all stations for officers to sleep there throughout the night and Transportation says about 40 trucks are on standby with snowplows.

We're being told the priority will be main thoroughfares near fire stations and hospitals.

"We've actually gone and put down brine at all 30 fire stations and the collective streets that tie in to the fire stations again to increase emergency response time," said Raleigh Transportation Director Paul Callan.

Raleigh is going to activate its Emergency Center on Saturday evening.

Raleigh Urban Forester Zach Manor says he has backup staff on standby to help remove downed trees and residents are being asked to park vehicles away from trees as limbs could come crashing down.

"Even if it's a branch or something small, it can cause an issue with being able to navigate basically," said Manor.
