Thursday, January 8, 2026
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- ABC11 has learned that Ryan Camacho, the man charged in the killing of a Raleigh schoolteacher, had several criminal cases in Durham.

One case involved a woman who told ABC11 that he broke into her home twice.

ABC11 reached out to the Durham district attorney's office to ask about how those cases were handled.

District Attorney Satana Deberry responded Thursday by saying in part, "A review of the cases shows that the evidence in Mr. Camacho's cases did not support felony conviction."

The DA went on to say, "Mr. Camacho has allegedly committed a horrible crime ... however, the 2021 and 2024 cases were handled appropriately based on the information and evidence available at the time."

Who is Ryan Camacho, man accused in Raleigh teacher's murder?

The DA's office said Camacho did serve time for cases.

Also Thursday, North Carolina Congressman Mark Harris slammed state Democrats for their crime policies, saying, "Mental health matters -- but at what point will Democrats stop using it as a get-out-of-jail-free card for dangerous criminals?"

Gov. Josh Stein has said the state must invest in our mental and behavioral health system, which he has called on state lawmakers to do.
