He was identified by the sheriff's office as 48-year-old James Tyrone Davis. His injury was self-inflicted, the sheriff's office added.
Deputies had developed Davis as a person of interest in a shooting just after 8 a.m. in the 2700 block of Covered Wagon Lane. Law officers found a man there suffering from a gunshot wound. That victim was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
There is no threat to the community or staff at the hospital, police said. As many as eight police cars were at the scene. Crime-scene tape was up around a black Toyota sedan in the hospital's parking lot.
The car's passenger side window was shattered. The emergency room parking lot has been closed while officers investigate.
"An incident occurred this afternoon in the parking lot at WakeMed North Hospital. There is no threat to patients or staff, and as a precaution, WakeMed North was temporarily put on controlled access," WakeMed said in a statement.
Kashina Moore was checking in at the hospital when she heard what was apparently the gunshot.
"We checked in, heard a big boom, turned around and looked, I just kind of saw people going all over the place, and next thing I know, the nurses said there was someone shot who shot themselves ... it was more scary for me because I just came from out in the parking lot," Moore said.
Raleigh Police are investigating the circumstances of Davis' death.
