2 Clinton residents killed in head-on crash on US 421 in Sampson County

SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Two people were killed in a two-vehicle crash in Sampson County on Monday.

An ABC11 breaking news crew was at the scene on northbound US Highway 421.

It happened just after 2 p.m. The North Carolina Highway Patrol said a Nissan passenger vehicle traveling southbound on US 421 crossed the center line and struck a dump truck pulling a small utility trailer head-on.

The dump truck ended up on its side with the Nissan under the dump truck in a ditch.

The two people in the Nissan died at the scene. State troopers identified them as Kenneth Evans, 54, of Clinton, and Mary Elizabeth Thompson, 74, of Clinton.

The dump truck driver, Carlie C. McLamb III, 34, of Dunn, was treated on scene for minor injuries.

Highway 421 was closed from New Bethel Road to Odom Road for nearly six hours. It reopened just before 8:30 p.m.
