According to the NC State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), Troopers responded to a hit-and-run call around 9:43 p.m. Thursday on I-87 in Wake County. Officers learned a Chevy Tahoe had been hit multiple times from behind by a driver in a Chevrolet S10 pickup.
The Tahoe was an NC General Assembly state-owned police SUV. It was being driven by Officer Jason Purdue and inside were House Speaker Moore, Rep. David Willis and Dan Gurley, who is Speaker Moore's Chief of Staff.
The driver of the pickup was identified as 38-year-old James Matthew Brogden of Goldsboro.
He's facing charges of misdemeanor speed to elude, failure to heed blue lights and siren, hit-and-run, driving while impaired, failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision, resist public officer and damage.
Brogden was treated at WakeMed and then booked into the Wake County Detention Center.
During a press conference held on Friday morning, Moore said he doesn't believe they were targeted and that there is no known contact between his office and the suspect.
