It happened on Morrison Avenue in Spring Lake.
Investigators said the fire started in the kitchen. That's also where they found the body of Levan McDaniel, 69.
His wife, Dorothy, 66, could not get out of the home on her own. When firefighters arrived and pulled her out of the burning home, they performed CPR on her, but could not save her life.
Levan's stepdaughter Stephanie Jacobs told ABC11 it appeared Levan was preparing a meal for her mother.
The McDaniel family said Levan was a veteran who served in Germany and Vietnam. He spent his last two years caring for his wife who was left debilitated by a stroke.
