Former ACC basketball player resigns teaching job after being charged with having sex with student

ROXBORO, N.C. (WTVD) -- A former men's basketball player at Virginia Tech has been charged with having sex with a student in Person County.

On Wednesday, at 10 a.m. the Person County Sheriff's Office was contacted by Person County Schools in reference to possible sexual misconduct between a teacher and a student. The local sheriff tells ABC11 that the student's father reported the case to authorities.

An investigation found that the incident happened outside the school at a home in the county.

Warrants show that Tyrone Khalil Outlaw, 28, faces a felony charge of a sex act with a student. Outlaw was booked into the Person County Detention Center on a $30,000 bond.

A representative for Person County Schools said Outlaw resigned from his position as social studies teacher and assistant basketball coach at Person County High School.

Tyrone Khalil Outlaw, 28 of Roxboro, was charged with sexual activity with a student.



Outlaw was a former basketball player at UNC Greensboro (2013-2014) and Virginia Tech (2015-2019).



"The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority, said Person County Schools Superintendent Dr. Rodney Peterson.

"We are deeply concerned by any allegation of an inappropriate relationship. Upon receiving an allegation of potential misconduct, we are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to ensure that all appropriate measures are taken. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement and provide support to our students, families and staff during this time."

Outlaw posted bond and was released about 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
