The gunshot injury caused the woman to crash her car shortly before 4 p.m., Durham Police said. The victim was taken to the hospital with what police said were serious injuries.
It was the third shooting incident in Durham since Wednesday evening. Six people were shot in two separate bouts of violent crime overnight Wednesday into Thursday. One of the victims died.
First, shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Wabash Street near Ridgeway Avenue, four people were shot: two men and two women.
One of the victims in that shooting later died from his injuries. Durham Police identified him as 30-year-old Larry Wynne Jackson Jr.
The other man who had been shot, and one of the women were taken to a hospital for treatment. The other woman had a graze wound on her arm and was treated at the scene.
The later shooting happened in the 1000 block of Linwood Avenue near Colfax Street.
Officers found a man who had been shot multiple times inside a parked vehicle. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
A short time later, a woman was dropped off at the emergency room for treatment of a gunshot wound. She told officers she had been shot while she was in the car with the man on Linwood Avenue.
"We in the Durham Police Department refuse to accept this as normal and we remain committed to work tirelessly to investigate these violent acts and arrest those involved. We continue to devote our resources in an effort to protect our community from senseless and reckless shootings," Interim Police Chief Shari Montgomery said.
Police said they do not know whether the shooting cases are related. No charges have been filed in any of the cases.
"I am asking the community to help us stop these senseless shootings. We are urging you to provide us with any information you have related to individuals involved in any violent crimes, especially gun crimes. The information provided by the community is critical and can help prevent and solve these incidents," Montgomery added.
