The Harnett County Sheriff's Office and Fire Marshal's Office confirmed at least five people died in the fire.
The house is located on Camp Ground Lane in Broadway, North Carolina.
Identities of those killed in the fire and their ages:
- Michael Breymeyer, 74
- Tammy Breymeyer, 58
- Daniel Garner, 39
- Two young boys, sons of Daniel Garner
Michael and Tammy Breymeyer were married and lived together at the house. Daniel Garner was a family friend who was staying with them, the sheriff's office said.
Kayla Gonzales works in town and recalled hearing sirens going off early Sunday morning.
"We started getting text messages and heard the sirens earlier in the day and it sounded serious," she said.
Gonzalez described the community as close-knit, and she knew one of the victims.
"Ms.Tammy comes in here all the time. She was there for anybody if you needed it. She always had something positive to say and a good outlook on what's to come," Gonzalez said.
She said a loss of this magnitude will leave an impact, especially in a town where everyone knows each other.
"It's shocking. I don't think I even have the words. It happened so unexpectedly. Life is precious and time is really short," Gonzalez said.
