Officers received an alert from Shotspotter just before 2:30 p.m. in the area of 200 West Enterprise Street. Police said witnesses later reported a gunshot wound in the 1110 block of South Street and Enterprise Street. A 12-year-old girl was taken to the hospital by her parents with life-threatening injuries. She is listed in stable condition.
Durham police said a second scene on Scout Drive and Lodge Street is connected to the shooting. A heavy police presence was visible outside of a home near that intersection and was blocked for several hours before reopening just after 7:00 pm.
Police would not say how the shooting involving the the 12-year-old is connected, but did say the child was running for safety when she was shot.
ABC11 spoke with nearby neighbors who say it is not uncommon to hear gunshots in this neighborhood.
"I never really feel safe it's just this is really scary because again it's an intersection I believe it happened on the intersection people drive by anybody could be walking there so you really you really don't know when and what will happen and I know everybody is affected," said Kasia Konopka.
