"We want folks to be safe. With the heat advisory it's not safe for patrons to be in the pool," said Jason Jones, assistant director for Durham Parks and Recreation.

Brother and sister Sebastian and Michelle Pagoada escaped today's summer scorcher at Edison Johnson Recreation Center's pool.

"I feel hot," said Sebastian, who prefers indoor pools.

His sister commented on outdoor pools as well.

"It's more fresh, and outside--it's like the sun is directly on you," stated his sister Michelle.

Durham Parks and Recreation staff told ABC11 they monitor the weather forecasts and usually make a decision the morning of regarding whether to close outdoor pools.

The city says it also has to consider the safety of its staff outdoors in this heat.

When there are significant heat advisories, they move staff to their two indoor pools.

All city pools are expected to open during their regular time this week until further notice.

City pools open at 1:00 p.m. and close at 5:00 pm.
