FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- A 1-year-old girl died and five other people were taken to the hospital in serious condition after a head-on crash Wednesday evening in Fayetteville.

Emergency officials responded to calls about the crash shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Turnbull Road near Troy Fisher Road. When crews arrived they found a Ford Taurus and Saturn Astra had collided head-on.

Authorities said the crash victims were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in serious condition. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

An investigation revealed that the Saturn was going west on Turnbull Road and was trying to pass another car when it collided with the Ford in the other lane. The child was in the Saturn along with four others.

Tire tracks were visible at the scene and ABC11 was there as state troopers captured images and took measurements along the road.

Area residents told ABC11 they heard the crash. One woman, who did not want to be identified but said she was a nurse, told ABC11 that she immediately called 911, and then ran outside to perform CPR on the little girl. She added that the child's mother was distraught and had three other children in the car with her.

Authorities identified the girl killed as Nylah McDuffie. Troopers said Nylah's mother was driving the car that attempted to pass. A 66-year-old was behind the wheel of the other car.

The Highway Patrol said the crash remains under investigation and it's too early to determine whether any charges will be filed.
