Bullet-riddled SUV remains in Durham neighborhood weeks after shooting, and neighbors are perturbed

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- People in a south Durham neighborhood say the crime tape came down, but the scene never did.

Two weeks after a drive-by shooting ended at Fayetteville Road and Larchwood Drive, a bullet-riddled SUV still sits on the block. Neighbors say it's a daily reminder that is hard to ignore.

"I grew up here. My home is a family home. And we've never had anything like this happen before," said Petra Clemons.

On Sept. 16, ABC11 was there after the vehicle was shot up during the drive-by. A man and woman inside were hit; both were taken to a hospital, the man with life-threatening injuries.

"New families are in the community. They take walks with their children. And this vehicle is here. It's a horrible reminder of what happened to whomever was in that car," said Clemons.

Clemons said neighbors called police repeatedly, even offered to call a tow company to have the SUV removed, but were denied. ABC11 found a sticker from the city, ordering the vehicle's removal.

ABC11 reached out to the Durham Police Department and the mayor's office to find answers.

"I do feel for the community having to relive every morning to wake up seeing the tragic memories of something that happened in their neighborhood," said Mayor Leo Williams.

The mayor told ABC11 that he reached out to the city manager and the police chief about this situation.

"Once they investigate a crime scene, it's no longer a value in regards to the evidence. We have to provide that property back to the owner or we have to provide that to, or leave it where it is," Williams said. "We're not allowed to seize property after it's been investigated and it's no longer of any value to the department. So, everything, it could be a myriad of reasons why that car is still there.

For people living in the neighborhood, it comes down to clarity and closure.

ABC11 also reached out to DPD about any updates in the case, to learn the names and the status of those people who were shot, and why it has taken so long to process the crime scene in this particular case, compared to others. Durham Police has not yet responded.
