Chapel Hill, Carrboro schools under consideration for closure as district navigates budget shortfall

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- Megan Goodwin is a Glenwood Elementary School parent who says the school stands out for several reasons.

"I think the magnet aspect and the dual-language programming at Glenwood are a draw to our school and to the district in general," Goodwin said.

Glenwood is among five schools that Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools is reviewing as it navigates a budget shortfall driven by declining enrollment and increasing operating costs.

"Our budget now and in the future is going to have to account for the fact that we're serving fewer students," CHCSS chief communications officer Andy Jenks said.

Jenks said several factors are behind the decline, including a lower birth rate and the rising cost of living.

"We used to be a district of about 12,000 students, and we're projected to be a district of about 9,500 students in the next 10 years," Jenks said.

If there are fewer students, then the district receives less in state funding. This means one or more schools could close in the future to help save money.

"We obviously are very appreciative and grateful for the programming at Glenwood," Goodwin said. "We're very hopeful that we'll be able to maintain that level of programming."

No changes are expected during the current school year, and if a school does close, district leaders say the programs would stay intact and move to a different building.

The school board is expected to take a final vote in June, with the earliest changes possibly coming in fall 2027.

The board will meet Thursday night to discuss the school closure study and the superintendent's proposed budget for the next school year.
