DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Anxiety is growing in the City of Durham on Tuesday after federal agents were spotted in neighborhoods and shopping centers.

"It's really sad," Nora Browning said. "It's very concerning because we don't know what's going to happen. We don't know how long they're going to be here."

Businesses in Central Durham were either short-staffed or closed on Tuesday, citing for the safety of the Latino community.

"There are definitely employees that didn't show up to work, and that's understandable," Antonio Rivas said. "You show up to work wanting to provide for your family here, or back home, and you just unfortunately can't today because of the fear."

Immigration operations have expanded across North Carolina, including in the Triangle.

According to Siembra NC, some immigrants were detained in Durham, Raleigh, and Cary.

On Tuesday, community leaders in Durham gathered at the All My Children Childcare on Angier Avenue, where the regional director of the center said agents were spotted.

"It's sad that kids can't go to school freely," Elisha Muhammad said. "They're younger than preschool. It's sad they have to live in fear."

Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams reacted to the sightings on Tuesday.

"We have volunteers and elected officials that are positioning themselves to keep an open eye on any potential activity just to make sure that it is documented and recorded and reported," Williams said.

He added that the city is standing up for one another.

"Stay connected. Keep your cameras ready. Make sure you document everything and do not make it worse for yourselves," Williams said.
