Durham Police to hold town halls on real-time crime center

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Durham Police Department is set to host several town halls this month about the department's real-time crime center.

It's a centralized police unit that uses technology to provide officers with up-to-the-minute information to respond quickly to incidents.

"What Peregrine does is bring together data that already exists within the police department, such as from the 911 system, the records management system, evidence systems ... brings those into one place and fuses that data together to make it useful to solve some of the hard problems that police have to solve every day," Tim Shriver said.

It's too early to tell exactly how the project will develop, but it comes as some people tell ABC11 News they're concerned about crime in the city.

According to Durham Police, there have been fewer shootings so far this year. Despite that, some residents, such as Percy Carrington, said it's impacting young people.

"It's been pretty bad here lately," Carrington said. "If someone would kind of bring that to a close."

Although Carrington said he's open to learning more about the real-time crime center project, others said they hope the city invests in community-based programs to help reduce crime.

"Invest in the library, afterschool programs, transitional living programs," Rocky Jones said. "Having stuff for you to do that's outside of going home."

Durham Police declined to comment ahead of the first Town Hall session on Tuesday but there will be three in-person town halls this week.

If you can't make it in person, there's a virtual session set for Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.
