As Durham crime rates fall, city remains vigilant

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Durham Police's third quarter crime report shows overall violent crime is reportedly down compared to 2024, but safety is on the minds of community members.

"I lost two sons due to murder in Durham," Abdul Burnette said.

Burnette lost two of his sons to gun violence in two separate shootings this year that happened less than two months apart.

Burnette started an organization called "Dads Against Gun Violence" in hopes of bringing families of victims of gun violence in the Bull City together.

"My goal ... is to help stop the murder rate in the city of Durham," Burnette said.

Property crime is also decreasing in the Bull City, however, there have been some break-ins.

At the Bean Flower on University Drive, the owner, CC Chu, said the business was broken into last month.

"Our cash register had been pulled out from under the counter and was pretty much smashed on the floor," Chu said. "The cash was gone. Our speaker was stolen."

Chu said the business took a day to recover but got right back into serving the community as the break-in happened during a time when federal agents were spotted in the city.

"Our main focus was just to make sure that we were still able to be here as a resource for people," Chu said.
