Unlicensed Raleigh dental provider faces charges after ABC11 Troubleshooter investigation

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- There are new details in a Troubleshooter investigation that left patients with braces on their teeth but no dental care after the provider closed up shop: That provider, Ebony Nicohole McBean, is now facing criminal charges.

McBean, of Garner, faces three felony counts of obtaining property under a false pretense and one misdemeanor count of practicing medicine without a license.

Bobby White, the Executive Director of the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners, said, "We want the public to be protected from folks that violate the trust of the dental person."

White said the board's investigation started after our Troubleshooter investigation into McBean.

In November, several patients of McBean's reached out after her Raleigh business, The Smiling Face Company, closed up shop, leaving patients, including Seanti Bullock, with braces on their teeth.

"I already paid in full in September, not knowing that it was going to be shut down," Bullock said.

She was just one of the patients affectedby McBean shutting down shop. During our investigation, McBean admitted to the Troubleshooter that she was not licensed to do orthodontic work but claimed she had a doctor who always oversaw the treatment. The court document says she was not working with a licensed orthodontist as she claimed.

White said that after the Board of Dental Examiners got complaints about McBean, it investigated and worked with Raleigh Police.

"Because she had falsified or pretended to be a dentist and she got that money, that was obtaining property by false pretenses, which is a felony, and that's where the police have done a great job in bringing those cases, those charges," White said.

According to the warrants, McBean took thousands of dollars from three different patients for fraudulent dental services and practiced medicine without obtaining a medical license from the North Carolina Medical Board. The warrants were taken out in November. White said it appeared McBean left the state, and Raleigh Police only arrested McBean on Friday.

She has since bonded out, and her attorney had no comment on the case. McBean is due back in court in March.

White said to Troubleshooter Diane Wilson, "We just want to make the public aware and give them compliments to you, the news media, for making the public aware that these kinds of things occur. They're serious; we take them seriously. We want to keep the public protected in North Carolina."

White said the Board of Dental Examiners wants to hear from other patients affected by McBean. He said those patients can file a complaint.

When it comes to these patients getting refunds for work not done, White said the board doesn't get involved in that; a judge can order restitution if McBean is found guilty. The Troubleshooter reached out to McBean but has not heard back.
