'Crazy expensive' fuel price increases hit small businesses hard

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Small business owners who rely on gas or diesel to do their work say overhead costs are soaring.

Crystal Gonzales uses several forms of fuel every day to open up her food truck and serve up the Philly classic to customers.

She has a propane tank to operate the grill and fryer. There's a generator that uses gas for the lights and then a pickup truck that requires diesel to haul the portable kitchen.

"The diesel truck, ugh, that boy takes more than $100 a week," said Gonzales.

She has had to raise prices and explains that she's not only dealing with increased fuel costs.

"We have a lot of spikes in groceries," said Gonzales. "It is definitely something that we also have to incorporate."

Other small business owners are feeling the pinch.

Nick Cassinelli owns Oak City Exterior Cleaning and also uses a generator to do his work.

"Everything's just getting crazy expensive," said Cassinelli.

He's been trying to absorb the added costs but says he too is getting hit in other directions.

"With loyal clients, repeat clients, I try to keep the prices the same. But it's just hard with gas, chemical operating costs, equipment costs, all that sort of stuff," said Cassinelli.

AAA Carolinas finds that the average price for a gallon of regular is up 25 cents from this time last week.
