DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Rising gas prices are affecting nonprofits, as well as people volunteering time and money.
Meals on Wheels Durham is working to see whether gas stations could offer volunteers a discount.
"Each of the routes that we have, they're about 25 miles round trip, and our volunteers, they take one or two 2 routes, and some of our volunteers take three routes just because the need is so big," said Meals on Wheels Director of Development Shawna Sheperd-Murtagh.
Volunteers pay out of pocket when they deliver food to seniors facing food insecurity.
"The fact that they're still showing that resilience in increased, uncertain times and increased cost, it's really powerful," said Sheperd-Murtagh.
About 500 meals go out every week.
AAA Carolinas said the average price for a gallon is up almost 18 cents from a week ago.
"The car I had to fill up takes the premium," said Durham resident Carl Harris, who paid more than $5 a gallon.
