Managing Editor

Job Summary:
The Managing Editor will oversee and lead the day to day assets for content acquisition and creation across all platforms. This individual will drive decisions on the coverage for each story including breaking news. They will oversee and be responsible for the scheduling, planning (both short-term and long-term projects and major events) and logistics of the daily coverage. This individual will bring innovative thinking and systems that will make our newsroom more efficient. The Managing Editor will also be responsible for coaching and advising reporters & photographers on best practices, storytelling and new hire onboarding. This individual will be a strong leader of people and processes with the ability to inspire their team, work well with the larger newsroom team, and constantly assess and have a pulse on the overall health of each daypart. This position will report into the News Director.

Job Responsibilities
  • Take a leadership role and provide direction to assignment desk editors, reporters and photojournalists in an effort to find and develop stories for all screens; Regularly inform EPs and content producers of coverage
  • Responsible for the coordination of long-range news events planning as well as the station's coverage of breaking news
  • Work in close partnership with Digital strategist for execution of daily story development, content creation and data driven decisions across digital platforms
  • Lead and oversee the daily editorial content and show production efforts
  • Effectively communicate with all station staff
  • Lead a team providing guidance and instructions on day-to-day tasks or assignments, ongoing performance feedback, and coaching and training in efforts to build a strong team
  • Primary point of contact for big story coordination across the Owned Television Stations group
    Serve as daily content manager, working one-on-one with content creators including approving reporter scripts, editing copy, reviewing content for facts and up-to-date information and making sure stories meet the station's legal and standards guidelines.


Basic Requirements
  • Experience working in a newsroom with strong editorial skills

  • Have an understanding of the market with a strong sense of our audience
  • Possess outstanding communication skills
  • Strong ability to problem-solve and multi-task, coordinating several responsibilities simultaneously
  • Proven ability to work well in high-pressured situations
  • Have knowledge of regulatory programming policies including content clearance rights (video, images, music, Fair Use policy, etc.), Drone usage, FCC Closed Captioning and Program Ratings rules, among others.
  • Expertise in working with the latest newsroom technologies and programs
  • Must have a strong work ethic


Preferred Requirements
  • Knowledge of Dalet and various newsroom programs
  • Experience producing content across linear and digital platforms
  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism or related field a plus or possess related experience

News Operations Manager

WTVD-TV, The ABC owned station in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, is seeking to hire a News Operations Manager that will support the news operation and help lead the department in the next era of newsgathering. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a multi-platform news environment, gathering and delivering content with multiple technologies.

Responsibilities:

Manage the logistical/technical operations of the news department including the management, scheduling, and news gathering functions of the following news personnel: Media managers, editors, photographers, and transmission operators
Troubleshoot technical issues and provide operational support for news personnel
Maintain skill and proficiency of news staff by developing and implementing regular training exercises
Work closely with News Director and Director of Technology/Engineering on capital initiatives and future-proofing the news operation
Function as technical liaison between news and Broadcast Technology/Engineering departments
Coordinate live, remote events with news, programming, and engineering departments
Interface with third party vendors and support technicians
Adhere to Disney policies and best practices for a broadcast/news environment

Qualifications & Requirements
The ideal candidate must:

Strong technical skills: Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

I-Team Producer

WTVD, the ABC owned-and-operated station in Raleigh-Durham, NC is looking for an experienced, dynamic Investigative Producer to join our established I-Team. This person must be able to take a story from start to finish: researching, interviewing, shooting, writing and video editing. The employee would not only produce stories for the linear TV platform, but also adapt those stories and produce for WTVD's digital and social platforms. Candidates must be active users of social media for news gathering and understand how to leverage those platforms for stories. Expect to contribute story ideas and offer ways to dig deeper into general assignment stories in the daily editorial meetings. We want a self-starter, team player who works well under pressure.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Generating story leads and following tips
Researching, shooting, writing, producing and editing investigative reports
Responsible for long form reports as well as quick daily turns depending on the news cycle
Expertise in digital and Social Media for all aspects of production and promotion

Job Summary:

ABC11 (WTVD-TV) serves Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville and beyond. The station has newsrooms and studios in each city.

The I-Team unit responds to viewers who need help or feel as though they have been ripped off or wronged. The I-Team looks for patterns of complaints attached to certain companies to warn other viewers. We also alert viewers to data and privacy concerns and find stories that have broad warnings, which can help improve people's everyday lives.

The Consumer division of the I-Team also proactively digs for other stories through research and the use of the Freedom of Information Act to uncover wrongdoing and problems which affect consumer's pocketbooks.

Responsibilities:

As an intern, you will have a unique, hands-on, opportunity to experience what it takes to work at a local television station. You will learn about the news-gathering process, on-air execution, and behind-the-scenes technology.

Basic Qualifications:

Internship Eligibility:

Must possess unrestricted work authorization

Must be at least 18 years old

Must be willing to provide your own housing and transportation for the duration of the internship
