RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Governor Josh Stein is recognizing the significant contributions of Native Americans in shaping North Carolina's history, culture, and future.
Speaking at the United Tribes of North Carolina's Annual Unity Conference, Stein reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the more than 130,000 American Indians who live in the state.
During his remarks, the governor said: "We all benefit when more Indian voices help shape the policies that affect the people of North Carolina."
North Carolina is home to eight staterecognized Native American tribes, including the Lumbee Tribe, which gained official federal recognition in December.
North Carolina would not be what it is today without the countless contributions of the American Indian people who call our state home," said Administration Secretary Gabriel J. Esparza. "They are a critical part of our history, and vital to the economy, communities and fabric of North Carolina."
