NC Lumbee tribal members in D.C. to witness historic moment

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has been added to the list of federally recognized tribes, formalizing its government-to-government relationship with the U.S.

This follows legislation signed by President Donald Trump in December 2025, affirming the tribe's status and fulfilling a promise made to the Lumbee people.

The president has long supported the Lumbee Tribe's quest for recognition.

“Federal recognition is about respect, accountability and self-determination,” said Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. “By formally recognizing the Lumbee Tribe, President Trump and the Department of the Interior are acknowledging a long and well-documented history of tribal governance and ensuring the tribe has a direct, sovereign relationship with the federal government. This action reflects our responsibility to listen to tribes, honor commitments and support strong tribal governments.”

The updated list, published annually in the Federal Register, now includes 575 tribes recognized for their immunities, privileges, and responsibilities in their relationship with the federal government.
