North Carolina lawmakers have released a long‑delayed state budget proposal that includes higher pay for educators and state employees.
The legislature has been dropping the rate, and the goal is to get it to 2.99% by 2033.
Under the framework, state employees would see an average 3% raise, while teachers would receive an average 8% increase, along with one-time bonuses.
The agreement aims to provide significant raises for teachers and law enforcement, and includes a drop in personal income-tax rates.
Advocates say the bill would help ensure more coaches are prepared to respond appropriately when athletes face mental health challenges.
One lawmaker said the legislation is aimed at protecting state schools in an increasingly competitive recruiting landscape.
