At 4:27 a.m., NC State Highway Patrol responded to a single-vehicle crash on US-64 west near mile marker 438.
According to NCSHP, a 2008 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck lost control on an icy bridge, ran off the road to the right and hit a tree.
The driver, 52-year-old, Diane Ashley Watson, was pronounced dead at the scene. The front seat passenger was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Exceeding a safe speed for the conditions of ice on the bridge is being investigated as a contributing factor in the crash.
Elsewhere this morning, a portion of I-540 in eastern Wake County was backed up due to a crash that closed multiple lanes of traffic.
At one point, there were 7 vehicles that crashed due to slick conditions on the overpass that is near Buffaloe Road.
A multi-vehicle crash closed the Capital Boulevard overpass at Durham Road.
That area has since re-opened and no injuries were reported.
The snow played a prominent role in Person County where the sheriff's office is warning people that roads remain hazardous because of low overnight temperatures.
