Man accused in death of teen hit on e-bike appears in court for involuntary manslaughter charge

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- The man charged in the death of a 15-year-old who died after being on an e-bike made his court appearance on a new charge.

Joseph Savarino is charged with felony death by motor vehicle, involuntary manslaughter and failure to reduce speed.

He was released on a $50,000 bond.

Savarino was initially charged with driving while impaired following the April 18 crash. Court records showed his blood alcohol content was above the legal limit hours after the collision.

According to Durham Police, Savarino was driving on Cole Mill Road when Jack O'Shea, who was riding an e-bike in the same direction, moved into his path. The collision was fatal, and Jack died at the scene.



Jack was a freshman at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh.

Savarino is the grandson of legendary Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.
