DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Durham mom is facing charges in the accidental shooting death of her 4-year-old son.

The shooting happened on June 23 at a house in East Durham.

The Durham Police Department (DPD) said the boy shot himself with an unsecured weapon and later died after being taken to the hospital.

Nearly two months later, on Tuesday, Aug. 5, DPD announced charges against the child's mother, Tiera McArthur, 26.

McArthur has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the investigation.

Police said she was also served with an outstanding warrant on an unrelated case in another jurisdiction.

The day after his death, friends and family members had a vigil for the boy. His great-grandmother shared memories of her grandson, Kamarii..

"My grandbaby was loving, and I'm going to miss him so much. I'm going to miss him," said Tina McLean, Kamarii's great-grandmother.

McLean said she'll remember Kamarii's loving, happy energy and his love of toys.

"Every time he would come to my house, my other grandson has a container of toys he will always go to and pull them toys out. And this morning, I said, Kamarii put the toys back. You know, just, you know, to make myself feel better," she said.
