NC woman arrested, charged with murder 7 months after toddler's death in Person County

PERSON COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Person County woman has been charged in the investigation into the death of a toddler.

On May 24 of this year, the toddler was found unresponsive in his crib.

On Nov. 18, the Person County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation (SBI) with the case. The SBI says a toxicology report shows that the child died from receiving a fatal dosage of multiple medications.

After several weeks, SBI agents consulted with District Attorney Mike Waters, and the decision was made to present the case to a grand jury. The grand jury returned a true bill indictment of Latisha Annette Linzsey in the toddler's death.

On Tuesday, the SBI announced the arrest of Linzsey in the death of Kemari Morgan.

She is being held at the Person County Detention Center under a $300,000 bond.

According to Kemari's biological mother, Briauna Morgan, Kemari had been in foster care through Person County Social Services since June 2024.

"I really can't explain the feelings because my emotions has been up and down because justice is finally being served," Morgan told ABC11 on Tuesday. "It's just insane to me. You can be a foster mother for so many years. You should know the amounts to give a 1-year-old."

In May, Morgan told ABC11 that she just wanted to know what happened.

"Because I understand accidents do happen. But I want to know what happened," she said at the time. "The whole time frame. This time. Like, what happened? Because something happened. Something happened."

Linzey is scheduled to make a first court appearance Wednesday in Person County.
