FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- What began as a routine school assembly turned into an unforgettable holiday surprise for dozens of third-graders at Lucile Souders Elementary School in Fayetteville on Thursday.

Students had gathered in the cafeteria expecting to learn the winners of an essay-writing contest, a tradition at the Fayetteville school. Instead, all 62 third graders learned they would be taking home brand-new bikes and helmets.

"It was surprising," third grader Ayden Locklear said.

Students were asked to read a book about goal-setting and write an essay answering the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

Career dreams ranged from hairstylist to artist to veterinarian.

Four students were selected as contest winners, including third grader Tyleah Coe. But moments later, organizers announced that every student would receive a bike, a twist that sent the room into an eruption of cheers.

"I was happy because everyone could get a bike, and no one would have to be sad," Coe said.

Paige Ross said the goal is to give children both inspiration and opportunity.

"We're happy to bring it to Cumberland County," Ross said. "In a world with so much technology, children still love to be outside and still love to ride a bike."

For many students, the gift was more than a new mode of transportation; it was a moment they'll remember for years.

"It means a lot," third grader Kalani Dobbins said. "I like riding bikes, and I like doing cool tricks on them."

Students told organizers they couldn't wait to go home and share the news with their families.
