Family members, fellow veterans, and local supporters gathered at Fayetteville Regional Airport to pay their respects.
A show of support was evident as Robinson's flag-draped casket arrived, with organizations including the Patriot Guard Riders standing in tribute.
"We've lost another one," said Robert White, assistant state captain for the Patriot Guard Riders Sandhills Chapter.
White, who regularly participates in ceremonies honoring fallen service members, described the emotional toll of these moments.
"It's tough, especially talking to the spouse or the mother or father. You get a little connection with them. And once they start, sometimes we start tears, tears rolling."
White said the Patriot Guard Riders respond to families' requests, standing with flags during visitation and escorting the body to the cemetery.
"We got all veterans and non-veterans here to show their honor for this young man," he added. "You just show up, show honor, dignity to the fallen and the family."
Robinson served as a weapons loader with the 555th Aircraft Maintenance Unit Weapons section, assigned to the 31st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Aviano Air Base.
He was swimming at Lake Barcis, about 30 minutes north of the base, on August 8 when he disappeared under the water and did not resurface.
Italian rescue teams responded and recovered his body at 7:35 p.m.
According to an online Italian travel site, swimming is strictly regulated or prohibited in large parts of the lake due to sudden temperature drops and hidden underwater currents caused by the dam.
"We extend our deepest condolences to Malachi's family, friends, teammates and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," said Col. Beau Diers, 31st Fighter Wing commander. " Our hearts are with everyone affected by his loss, and we remain committed to supporting our Airmen and their families as we mourn together. We appreciate the response and actions by our Italian partners in attempting to locate Malachi and save his life."
The 31st Fighter Wing is supporting Italian authorities as they continue their investigation into the circumstances of Robinson's death.
