Staff Sgt. Michael Swinton: Family, friends and community members honor fallen NC soldier
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Family, friends and community members gathered Saturday at South View Baptist Church to honor Staff Sgt. Michael Swinton, a husband, father and soldier remembered for his service to his country and devotion to his family.
Many mourners wore orange as a personal tribute to Swinton during the funeral.
SSG Swinton was killed July 19 at Erbil Air Base in Iraq during a controlled detonation of a downed Iranian one-way attack drone.
During the service, loved ones described the 30-year-old as warm, welcoming, fun and kind. Speakers reflected on both his faith and the impact he had on those around him.
"A man who loved his family deeply and the man who served his country continuously today we grieve our loss, but we rejoice in the fact that Michael is with his savior in heaven today," one speaker said.
Others spoke about his commitment to those who served alongside him and his dedication to military service.
"He cared deeply for his soldiers. He served his country relentlessly on several deployments," a speaker said.
Swinton served at Fort Bragg. Speakers also highlighted his devotion to his family and his ability to bring love and light into the lives of others.
"Because of his faith in God, he is stationed in the kingdom of God. As a soldier of the most high God, staff, sergeant Swinton, you fought the good fight," a speaker said.
The service came days after Swinton's flag-draped casket returned to Fayetteville earlier in the week. Those attending gathered not only to remember his service and sacrifice, but also the man his family knew and loved.

A processional service is scheduled for Monday, departing from the funeral home with a full escort to Sandhills National Cemetery.
