DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Durham Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that left a man seriously hurt.

It unfolded on Main Street near Angier Avenue, just a few blocks from DPD headquarters.

A large police presence affected anyone who might be in that part of downtown Durham this evening.

Neighbors told ABC11 that a man was struck when shots were fired from a vehicle.

ABC11 is working to confirm those details with Durham Police and to learn what led up to the shooting.

Investigators have been working at the scene for hours. Multiple evidence markers -- one in the road and several on the sidewalk - were visible.

One person told ABC11 that a cousin had been shot in the leg. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to be okay.

A neighbor said he heard several gunshots and saw a car speed away.

He said he knows the man who was shot and reacted to the violence.

"Of course, it's always unfortunate when things play out like this," said Broderick Best. "Whatever rhyme or reason, it's just always unfortunate. Hopefully, things like this slow down, and we can get a thumb on it."

Best said the victim was a "good guy."

The area remains closed to drivers.
