Motorcyclist killed in Raleigh collision; driver faces charges, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a car Saturday night in Raleigh, police told Eyewitness News.

At 11:10 p.m., Raleigh police were dispatched to the intersection of Yonkers Road and I-440 East. Upon arrival, officers found a severely damaged motorcycle in the roadway and a Nissan Altima with front-right damage.

The driver of motorcycle, identified as Lewyn Stewart Jr., 55, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Altima, identified as Cynthia Lucas, 41, and the passenger sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital, authorities said.

According to police, the motorcyle was traveling north on Yonkers Road, while the Altima was traveling south on Yonkers and was going to make a left turn to the ramp of I-440 E. Lucas told officers she did not see the motorcyclist.

A witness at the stop sign for the I-440 East ramp to southbound Yonkers Road told police that the Altima turned into the motorcycle's path.



Lucas faces charges of failure to yield the right of way, unsafe movement, and death by vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.
