NC voters, politics | Election bill that shortens early voting days expected to be vetoed by Gov. Josh Stein

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Gov. Josh Stein is expected to act Monday on House Bill 958, a sweeping election measure recently passed by lawmakers that has drawn opposition.

If it takes effect, House Bill 958 would shorten primary early voting, give the state auditor authority to conduct independent post-election audits and require military personnel serving abroad to mail a photocopy of their photo ID.

Supporters say the changes would strengthen election security, build trust, and streamline election administration. Opponents argue the measure could restrict voter access.

Stein has criticized the legislation, calling its provisions "unnecessary complications to the voting process."

The governor is expected to veto the bill Monday. A veto would send the legislation back to the chamber for a possible override vote.
