Man convicted of killing Wake County deputy Ned Byrd sentenced on gun possession, escape charges

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WTVD) -- A man convicted of the murder of a Wake County deputy was sentenced to an additional seven years in prison on Monday.

Alder Marin Sotelo, one of two brothers serving prison sentences for the murder of Wake County sheriff's deputy Ned Byrd, got the additional time for an escape from a Virginia detention center.

He is already serving a life sentence without parole for Byrd's murder.

In August 2022, investigators said that Alder Alfonso Marin-Sotelo and his older brother, Arturo Marin-Sotelo, shot and killed Byrd. Arturo Marin-Sotelo later admitted to authorities that they had an AK-47 with them at the time, but told investigators they were using it to hunt deer.

While waiting to be tried on state murder charges, Alder Marin-Sotelo was convicted in December 2022 on a federal charge for possession of a firearm while living in the United States illegally.

Alder Marin-Sotelo was being held at Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville, Virginia, while awaiting sentencing on the federal charge. He escaped the jail with the aid of his sister. He then fled to Mexico and had to be extradited to the United States.

Alder Marin-Sotelo pleaded guilty to that prison escape earlier this year.

Alder Main-Sotelo received five years and three months for the gun possession by a felon charge and two years for breaking out of the Virginia prison. The judge ordered that the sentences are to run consecutively.

His brother, Arturo, was convicted in an accessory role and given a sentence of up to 10 years.
