Caniacs plan outdoor watch parties across Triangle amid dangerous heat

Updated 29 minutes ago
Outdoor watch parties are popping up across the Triangle as Carolina Hurricanes fans prepare for Game 6, but potentially dangerous heat is prompting health warnings for those planning to gather outside.

From Cary to Zebulon and outside the Lenovo Center, watch parties will take place across the Triangle Sunday, including a large watch party at Red Hat Amphitheater in downtown Raleigh.

"Growing up tailgating, we're kind of used to some, some level of heat," said Michael Chambers of Winston-Salem.

Fans say they are excited about the atmosphere, even as they prepare for high temperatures. Some are still weighing options for outdoor viewing.

"We're thinking about watching here outside. We weren't able to get tickets for inside (the Lenovo Center). But we're hoping it will be cool enough," said Alexis Ward of Raleigh.

With the heat expected to linger, fans say hydration is a top priority as they finalize their plans.

"Just making sure that you're staying hydrated, I think that's a big thing. A lot of fluid loss with the heat and sweating and humidity. So, it can kind of sneak up on you, especially for people that are partaking in any alcoholic beverages too. Certainly, important to stay hydrated while you're doing that," Chambers said.

Experts with the American Red Cross warn that heat-related illnesses can develop quickly and may not be immediately noticeable. They urge people to watch for warning signs while outdoors.

"Heat exhaustion or heat cramps or, forbidden, heat stroke, really can (...) creep up on you," said Phil Harris of the American Red Cross Sandhills Chapter.

Officials say symptoms could include profuse sweating, clammy skin, cramping and light headedness. They recommend drinking plenty of water, wearing light clothing, and bringing cooling measures such as portable fans.

"Try to find some shade, try to get a chance to stay out of that hot sun, and then even when the sun goes down, the heat is still there," Harris said.
The watch party outside the Lenovo Center is set to begin at 5 p.m. Sunday. The Red Hat Amphitheater opens at 6:30 p.m.

For those planning to attend, here's what to know:
  • The watch party outside Lenovo Center on the plaza begins at 5 p.m.
  • Red Hat Amphitheater opens its doors at 6:30 p.m. for Sunday's watch party
  • Additional watch parties are happening across the Triangle

Fans are encouraged to drink plenty of water, take breaks in the shade and monitor how they're feeling throughout the event.
