Raleigh hotels modify services under water restrictions

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Hotels across Raleigh are making changes to guest services as the city remains under stage one water restrictions, which apply to both outdoor and indoor water use. The rules require hotels, motels and bed-and-breakfasts to ask guests staying more than one night to reuse towels and bedsheets.

At the Heights House Hotel in Boylan Heights, staffers said they are working to help guests understand the temporary changes.

"We definitely are able to have face-to-face conversations and explain to them in detail if they have questions about why do we need to not change our sheets or why do we need to keep our towels," said hotel manager Saki Taylor.

The hotel is placing laminated cards in guestrooms explaining the city's guidance.

"Because one of our core values is environmental sustainability," Taylor said. "So, we proactively place these laminated cards in the room, saying this is what Raleigh Water has said because of the drought."

Under normal circumstances, staff would replace sheets and provide fresh towels daily through a laundry service. But the hotel, like others in the city, is required to follow the indoor-use rules while restrictions remain in effect.

"Part of being able to give personalized service is to have that face-to-face and say we're all in this together and we're providing the absolute best," Taylor said.

City officials say the restrictions are intended to ensure adequate water supplies for drinking, healthcare, and emergency needs. Taylor said guests have been supportive of the changes.

"If it means giving up fresh towels every single day, then yeah, absolutely," she said.
