Raleigh residents adjust, adapt to new water restrictions

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Sarah Pendarvis is already thinking of how to keep her children entertained in the days ahead. Warm weather is set to return as Raleigh remains in a drought, and the City has imposed water restrictions.

"Even when it's not so hot, my kids love just running around in the sprinkler and doing the water slide," said Pendarvis. "We would have to find other ways to cool off (like) popsicles, ice cream."

New water restrictions began Monday.

It's not annoying to me. If you have adequate knowledge, you know how to adapt.
- James Camp, Raleigh resident

Automatic and manual sprinklers may only be used between midnight and 10 in the morning.

Homeowners with odd-numbered addresses are supposed to water on Tuesdays, and those with even-numbered addresses on Wednesdays.

Handheld hoses and drip irrigation systems may be used at any time.

James Camp said the drought isn't really affecting him because of the preparations he made during the past several months.

He was raised in rural Chatham County and grew up living off the land, which includes capturing and conserving water.

Camp has buckets around his property filled with rainwater from previous storms. He's now putting them to use during the severe drought.

"It's not annoying to me. If you have adequate knowledge, you know how to adapt," said Camp.

Robert Stewart has lived in the Brentwood neighborhood of Raleigh for 35 years. He said droughts and city-imposed restrictions are nothing new. He remembers ones in 2007 and 2008.

"We made it," said Stewart. "Back then, I think they allowed us to water more frequently than what I'm hearing now."
