HOPE MILLS, N.C. (WTVD) -- Newly released search warrants connected to the killing of a Cumberland County Sheriff's Office deputy publicly name a North Carolina State Highway Patrol sergeant as the person a witness says pulled the trigger.

According to search warrants first obtained by our newsgathering partner The News & Observer, a witness told investigators that Capt. Adam Bean was shot by Nekime Oxendine. Oxendine is a sergeant with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The warrants describe what authorities say happened the night of March 27 at a home in Hope Mills.

According to the documents, a witness -- who is also a Cumberland County Sheriff's Office employee -- told investigators that Bean arrived at her home upset that Oxendine's truck was parked there.

The warrants state that Oxendine walked out of the house holding a gun and fired one shot into the ground. Moments later, he allegedly fired several more shots, striking Bean.

Bean was found lying on his back in the front yard. Investigators say the woman was performing CPR when deputies arrived.

The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case. According to The News & Observer, the SBI says no one has been charged at this time.

Oxendine, an 18-year veteran of the Highway Patrol, remains on administrative leave. The warrants say investigators are examining possible first- and second-degree murder charges.

The investigation remains ongoing.
