RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A man is dead and a woman is seriously injured after a shooting in Raleigh.

According to police, the shooting happened on Briarmont Court just before 10 Friday morning. Responding officers found a man and a woman who had been shot.

Both were taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The man later died, Raleigh police said.

The man has been identified as 51-year-old Sherice Dangelo McClain.

Multiple sources told eyewitness news that Wake County Reserve Deputy Yalanda Moore-McClain owned the home where the shooting happened.

Sources said she worked full-time for the sheriff's office for nearly 11 years until 2009.

According to investigators, Moore-McClain was shot Friday morning alongside her husband Sherice outside their town home north of 440 near Walnut Creek.

One woman who lives in the same community told ABC11 she heard five gunshots at the time of the shooting. She said she's concerned for her kids and others in the neighborhood.

"I have two...it's scary. I try and stay to myself. In and out. In and out not in anybody else's business," she said.

Maurice Wilcox, 46, has been charged with murder in McClain's death. He's facing additional charges of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury for the injuries to the woman.

Police tell ABC11 they believe all three people involved in the shooting knew each other, and there is no danger to the community.

Investigators didn't reveal a motive in the shooting but the I-team found property records for a town home on Briarmont Court where neighbors said the alleged killer lived with his mother.

The documents shows the townhouse is owned by mental health services organization, healing interventions, where Moore-McClain has been CEO of since she stopped working full time at the sheriff's office.

"The neighbors, they are always quiet people...I don't know why it would lead to violence like that," Demile Townes said.

He rushed home from work when his wife called him to say what happened. Townes said he couldn't go in until the investigators cleared some of the crime scene.

"As neighbors all we can do is look out and try and watch out for each other but things will happen," he said.

The shooting created a scary situation for a nearby Montessori school which had to bring their students inside until it was deemed safe.

"It's sad and unfortunate that we have to be so close to these types of dangers you know with gun laws and gun violence all of it kind of ties into the situation that happened today," says Dr. Kendra Williamson-Henriques, the owner of Woodmeadows Montessori.

"I think it's really sad that it occurred in the neighborhood like that," she says. Williamson says she wishes RPD would be more aware of smaller, private schools that might be impacted in situations like these. She says she had to call the police to learn what was happening, but luckily all the students were safe, and they were able to continue their day as normal.
