Kids, adults make snow day memories in Raleigh with skateboards, laundry baskets

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- While crews across Raleigh worked to clear roads after the winter storm, many residents bundled up and headed outside to make the most of their snow day.

At the Lake Lynn sledding hill, people got creative with whatever they could find to sled. One of the more creative rides belonged to Alyssa Corrado, who grabbed her laundry basket when stores ran out of sleds.

"Honestly, everything else was sold out," Corrado said. "So we actually came out here last weekend with his laundry basket, and we tore it up to pieces. This is the only thing that's left. We looked everywhere for sledding, and everything was out. And it works. It works. So why not?"

Nate Mott found another unconventional solution: his skateboard without wheels, with a little help from his dog, Jasper. He explained how he made it work.

"First, tempt the dog with a treat," Mott explained. "Make sure he knows he goes down the hill, then run and jump on it."

Families packed the sledding hill, with kids thrilled to finally see snow. "My shoe came off," said Paul Donahue while sledding. "It's hard to sled, it's cool." Despite the cold temperatures, the excitement kept everyone warm.

While the snow brought plenty of fun, officials continue to remind residents to stay off frozen lakes and ponds across North Carolina, warning that the ice is not thick enough to safely support people.
