The Wake County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded just before 10 p.m. to Bartons Enclave Lane, near Raleigh, to assist the Durham Highway Fire Department and EMS after a tree fell onto a home.
First responders found a man who had been trapped inside the home. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.
Two other people were inside the home when the tree fell, but no one else was injured.
Meanwhile, cleanup is underway following a night of severe storms.
Sheets of rain fell across the area. The storms also caused extensive damage to some homes in Wake County.
The stormy weather caused many disruptions in several parts of central North Carolina. From heavy rain to strong bursts of wind, officials were staying busy to keep people safe.
That included downtown Raleigh, where Red Hat Amphitheater had to be evacuated Tuesday night during the highly anticipated Bob Dylan concert.
The venue posted that the decision was made because of lightning in the area.
Power outages have also been a concern. About 12,000 people were without power in Wake County late Tuesday evening. Some areas also saw flooded streets and yards.
Raleigh Police said parts of a falling tree hit a fire truck as it was responding to a call. The fire truck had minor damage and remained in service until the morning. No one was injured, RPD said.
One of the areas that was hit hard is near Raleigh-Durham International Airport at Leesville Road near I-540.
In a neighborhood on Big Creek Road, cleanup is underway after a large oak tree fell on a house. Another tree came down on Pinecrest Road near RDU.
A tree also fell on a house on Country Court off Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh.
The home was damaged, and at least three cars were destroyed. The residents were shaken but not injured.
