For longtime resident Rene Santana, perceptions of safety in the area depend on the time of day.
"I come every day. Every day," Santana said.
Santana said he regularly walks through Glenwood South but prefers to do so before the nightlife crowds arrive.
"At this time? Very safe. After midnight. Not as safe," Santana said.
Away from the bright lights and busy nightlife of Raleigh's entertainment district, Raleigh Police said they are working to increase safety through a variety of strategies.
Sgt. Phil Falco said the department has increased weekend patrols on Glenwood South and is also sending officers on foot patrols to maintain contact with local businesses.
"We know, we can't be everywhere all the time. So, the more communication lines we establish out in the community, that's a force multiplier for us, for us to offer different resources and different strategies to increase the perceived safety downtown," Falco said.
The Raleigh Police Department has also partnered with the Downtown Raleigh Alliance, which provides security ambassadors near the GoRaleigh Transit Station as well as garage ambassadors.
The added presence is welcomed by some people who frequent the area.
"There's always officers like, on every block of the street. I think it's they're trying to make changes, and I don't think it's something that happens all the time," said Jamar Davis.
Police also reminded people to lock their doors, travel with friends, and contact law enforcement if they need assistance.
