WCPSS leaders debate calendar changes to some year-round schools to address under-enrollment

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Wake County school leaders met Tuesday to discuss proposed calendar changes affecting up to eight year-round schools, but a power outage ended the meeting early.

The discussion, however, is far from over.

District leaders are working to address under-enrollment at some year-round schools while also cutting costs.

The proposed changes would take effect in either the 2027-28 or 2028-29 school year.

One proposal would shift Holly Grove Elementary from a multi-track year-round calendar to a traditional schedule with a longer summer break.

"It would be a huge disruption to our families," parent Jackie Stearns said.

Officials say multi-track calendars were once needed to manage growth, but extra seats are no longer necessary in some areas.

"Our kids benefit from the frequent breaks throughout the year," Stearns said. "It gives them time to decompress ... and come back refreshed."

Other schools, including Pleasant Grove Elementary, could move to a single-track year-round schedule.

"Year-round was new for me, but we like the idea," parent Alexander Thomas said, adding it has already helped his kindergartner.

"I feel like the longer of a break away from that schedule only increases the difficulty in them going back," Thomas said.

The school board is expected to receive a final recommendation on May 5, with a possible vote on May 19.
