Young leukemia survivor headed to Omaha to cheer on UNC in CWS finals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- Six-year-old David Hill is packing for Omaha as North Carolina advanced to the College World Series Finals, and the young Tar Heels fan could not be more excited.

"Happy, very excited for the guys," David said. "If we win today, Omaha, here we come!"

UNC secured its spot in the finals after defeating West Virginia 12-7 on Wednesday afternoon.

For David and his family, the team's success means they are heading west to cheer on the Diamond Heels in person -- a trip made possible through Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious illness or disability with college athletic programs.

For David, a leukemia survivor, the relationship with the team runs deep.

"They came to visit him at the hospital several times. They came and hung out with him at some of the cancer events that he did. He made several buddies," his father, Joshua Hill, said.

The Diamond Heels supported David throughout his treatment, and he has since become an honorary member of the program, attending games, practices, and team events. For the Hills, the trip represents far more than a chance to watch baseball.

"It doesn't just mean that I'm happy that we're going on a plane," David said. "It means to me, like the guys are winning the games ... they're having a lot of time together, and I'm happy they're having fun together because that's what friends are all about."

UNC will face either Oklahoma or Georgia, who play Wednesday night to determine the other finalist. The Championship Series games will air on ESPN and ABC.
