Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears to be an isolated incident. It comes just a week before municipal primary elections take place in Durham, and concerned residents are pointing to October 10th as their first opportunity to reverse some of the recent violence affecting the Bull City.

Niki Cannady has a 7-year-old daughter, and she said the uptick in gun violence and the way it is affecting her family concerns her.

"This is happening on an everyday basis. It used to be an every-now-and-then thing," Cannady said. "It's sad to see people laying on the ground. It's sad to see sheets over their bodies. I'm sad for my baby. You've got to turn around and hug her and make sure they can't see."

Cannady wants candidates running for office this cycle to spend more time in neighborhoods plagued with crime and violence. She said she sees campaign signs but doesn't feel like any of the candidates actually represent her or advocate for her neighborhood's safety.

"All you see is these little signs of elected people. I'll be honest with you, I don't even know their faces like I used to," she said.

City Councilwoman Dedreana Freeman lives on the block where Monday's shooting happened.

"I mean, I know them (the victims) in passing. They were recently, they recently moved in," Freeman said. "I just know that, yeah, everyone on the block is going to be shaken for a while."
