Barry Hayes appeared in court Wednesday after spending several days in a hospital recovering from injuries sustained in the crash that killed Scott and Jennifer Christofferson. Their young daughter survived.
Authorities said Hayes ran a red light and crashed into a Fast Park shuttle on Glenwood Avenue near Lumley Road, causing the shuttle to roll over.
According to authorities, Hayes' family reported him missing the day after the crash, saying he left a relative's home in a family vehicle while family members were out of town. Because of a reported cognitive impairment, a Silver Alert was issued before investigators determined the missing person was the same man involved in the crash.
Court documents show Hayes told hospital staff that he did not have a driver's license. Prosecutors asked the court to set a $300,000 bond, prohibit Hayes from driving and require that he continue receiving any necessary medical care while in custody.
It remains unclear whether Hayes' reported cognitive impairment will play a role in the investigation.
Hayes did not ask the judge any questions during Wednesday's hearing. No members of the victims' family attended the hearing.
The Christofferson family declined to comment but continues to remember Scott and Jennifer Christofferson, whose funerals were held over the weekend.
Jennifer Christofferson worked as an occupational therapist at Duke Health.
In a statement, Duke Health said:
"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our Duke Health colleagues. We extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to her loved ones and are providing care and support to team members in occupational therapy who are grieving this sudden loss."
Sara Narcisse said Jennifer Christofferson had a significant impact on her 3-year-old son. Narcisse said the last text message she received from Christofferson came on the day of the crash and included information about her son's next appointment after Christofferson returned from vacation.
"She was very encouraging. She was very uplifting. She was always pointing out Leo's progress," Narcisse said. "It's been a devastating loss that she is no longer with us."
