Durham father speaks out against gun violence, honors late son

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- As the City of Durham continues to make strides to combat violence, one man is making it his mission to focus on young people after his son was shot and killed in August.

"I'm still heartbroken," Abdul Burnette said.

Burnette's son, 18-year-old Suliman Burnette, died in a shooting in August at the SureStay Plus by Best Western Hotel on Hillsborough Road.

A 17-year-old is facing charges in connection with the shooting death.



"It's not right to the youth out here today to see gun violence or to witness gun violence," Burnette said.



Burnette said he started the group "Dads Against Gun Violence" in honor of his son.

So far this year, Durham Police reports there have been nearly 400 shootings in Durham, which is fewer than the number of shootings around this time last year.



In Durham County, the top eight crimes were down 26% compared to last year.

However, Durham Police find young people are continuing to be involved in gun violence, with 22 people younger than 18 shot in Durham as of Sept. 13.

"It's going to take multiple men to stop the gun violence in Durham. It's going to take this village to raise all these kids, to bring the community together," Burnette said.
