Homes, apartments and cars destroyed in Durham after Eno River rise to historic level

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Tropical Depression Chantal caused major flooding Sunday night into Monday in Durham, specifically the northern part of the county.

This prompted emergency evacuations and water rescues near the flooded Eno River along Rippling Stream Road, where cars and other vehicles were submerged under water.

Overnight storms from Chantal caused significant flooding to Eno River in Durham County.

According to the fire department, the Eno started to rise around 9:30 p.m. before eventually cresting and causing flooding in the area of Roxboro Road and Rippling Stream Road. The Eno River has blown past previous flood records set by Hurricane Fran in 1996.

The areas of High Meadow Road, Omega Road, Felicia Street and Greymont Drive were also impacted.

In total, 80 people were rescued by boat and dozens more evacuated on foot, the fire department said. Two Maydays were called during this incident, including one for an overturned boat and the other for a boat crashing into some trees by the water current.

There have been no reported injuries so far, the fire department said.

"Water rescue operations have ceased and damage assessment will be ongoing throughout the day," Division Chief Shawn Field said.

Heavy rainfall overnight caused significant flooding across the region, including in Orange County, Southern Pines, and Moore County.
